The view from the road which connects Iringa to the Tanzam highway. 8am on the begining of our weekend adventure to the Udzungwa Mountains.

Stretching our legs on the way

The tanzam highway between Iringa and Dar, hardly a car on the road....absolutely bliss to drive.

There's a stretch of about 50k of road, 2 hous east out of Iringa where you drive through a deserted, dry mountainous area which is literally littered with baobab trees, it's eerily beautiful.

Bananas

Christopher and...

....Joseph (good biblical names), ensuring our safety in our search from hippos and crocs on the Kilombero River. Alas not one in sight...

Rush hour on the river.

On our way back we pulled into the shore so Joseph could buy some fish for his supper!

The kids who kindly guarded our car as we risked life an limb looking fro crocs on the river.

Thats the thing about camping, can never be too sure about who you're sharing your tent with?

Sun rising, camping in Mangula, at the bottom of the Udzungwa Mountains

The view of the Sanje Falls as we drove by on the road at the bottom of the mountain.

The truely awsome Sanje Falls from half way up/down (depending on your outlook!)
What looks like the top there is in fact only the top of that part, there are two further falls higher up and further back which feed into this. The rock you see at the top, 4000ft from the bottom of the mountains is where we later sat and ate our lunch after the climb.

We're treking along and then our guide starts shouting 'run, run, ants!', not an easy task considering the gradient, temperature and time we'd been climbing. After running about 50 meters it all becomes clear, as we're getting bitten like crazy by huge ants!! As you can see lots of stamping, shoe and sock and even trouser removal to get rid of 'em.

We had to throw our shoes over here, then drop our draws and wade through a strong, hip deep current, praying we didn't get washed down the god, damn mountain (this wasn't mentioned when we paid at the bottom).

Absolutely exhausted at the end of a three hour climb, but worth every torn muscle to experience those views. Just below us there is the third and largest of the falls!

The second fall down in the series, we were told you could swim in the pool, so......

I can not begin to explain how excruciatingly cold that water was. An overwhelmingly thrilling, frightening and freezin experience all in one!
